Science & Math Education in ACTION
Summer Bridge Student Comments
This is what current students are saying about the ACTION Summer Bridge program:
I found the ACTION Summer Bridge Program extremely beneficial. I liked interacting with multiple faculty members so that I could make connections with them before ever being in their classes. The Summer Bridge Program gave me an entirely new outlook on life - I started to view life with a critical eye. Through the development of 21st century skills, I began to think in a much more sophisticated manner. More significantly, I loved having the opportunity to get acclimated to BGSU before all of the other students began their classes. Lastly, the friendships I made throughout the Summer Bridge Program will last a lifetime. It was wonderful knowing that I had friends at BGSU before ever stepping foot on campus at the beginning of fall semester.
- Alyssa, Freshman, AYA Mathematics Education Major
Summer Bridge was amazing! At first, I wasn't too sure about giving up a month of my summer—but I’m so glad I did! We did a variety of things such as learn about bacteria, go zip lining and interact with reptiles. I am now ahead of the game when it comes to school. I am more prepared than I would've been if I hadn't done anything before fall classes. Summer Bridge enabled me to be more accustomed with the buildings on campus and taught me how to stay on top of my assignments. I loved every aspect of the program and had so much fun while I was learning. The program also gave me a chance to build relationships with people I now consider some of my best friends and that I know will last a lifetime.
- Davis, Freshman, AYA Mathematics Education Major
Summer Bridge was an experience that provided many benefits. I built a network of people and resources to help me in a number of situations. I met new people and made new friends. I also got a chance to get used to the college lifestyle and work on time management. For me, the Summer Bridge was a great first stepping stone on my path through college that provided stability and a good starting point for the rest of my college career.
- Mike, Freshman, AYA Integrated Science Education Major
I had a tough choice to make about my summer plans after high school graduation. Being in ACTION and attending the Summer Bridge was by far the best choice I've made at BGSU. Getting to know the campus, faculty, and other students before my first semester started made a huge impact in my successes and college experience!
- Nikki, Sophomore, Middle Childhood Education Major
I went into the Summer Bridge thinking that I would be spending the entire month with a bunch of math and science nerds. I couldn't have been more wrong. During the Summer Bridge I learned a lot about math and science, had a blast while doing it, and made some awesome friends! I met one of my best friends in the ACTION Program!
- Georgia, Senior, AYA Mathematics Education Major
I was a bit apprehensive at first to cut out a month of my last summer before college in order to go to school. But once I got to BGSU, I had so much fun, made so many great friends, and got a taste of the college life that made it all worth it. Summer Bridge helped ease me into college and calm any anxieties I had about classes and going away to school and living away from home for the first time. It was great to build such good relationships with the people I'd be living with for the next several years on the ACTION floor in Offenhauer. I had an amazing experience and made so many unforgettable memories over Summer Bridge, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
- Marina, Freshman, AYA Chemistry Education Major
The Summer Bridge was so beneficial to me because I was nervous that I was not going to easily make friends in college. As part of an ACTION cohort we really do have friends before the school year starts. Also, during the Bridge we are encouraged to try new things and step out of our comfort zone. Going to the low-ropes course encouraged me to take faith in myself and really trust and learn about my other peers. The Summer Bridge is an experience that cannot be traded for anything.
- Kerri, Sophomore, AYA Mathematics Education Major
ACTION is fantastic! Not only did it give me a bunch of friends I knew in the first week of college, but I had a BLAST at the summer program and was already comfortable living on campus as a freshman. In addition, my practicum experience gave me a chance to learn more about how I can apply science to my students and the capstone research project will enable me to work with something that I feel is important to myself as a professional science teacher.
- Erin, Senior, AYA Life and Earth Science Education Major
At first, I was a bit hesitant in committing myself to the ACTION program because joining would mean that I would have to miss an entire month of my last summer at home. With much consideration and persuasion from my parents, I decided to attend the Summer Bridge Program and become a member of ACTION. Little did I know that this seemingly minor choice would turn out to be one of the best decisions of my life. The Summer Bridge not only taught me valuable math and science skills, but it also made the transition from high school to college much easier. This program allowed me to became familiar with the campus and develop many friendships that will surely last a lifetime.
- Kevin, Sophomore, AYA Mathematics Education Major
The summer bridge program is an extremely beneficial aspect of the ACTION program that helps first year students become acquainted to the college life before the fall. During the summer there are many interactive and exciting sessions that incorporate mathematics and science in a new way. Also, it is nice to build friendships during the summer and know that you already have a group of friends to come back to in the fall. Being able to live on the same floor in a residence hall is great because the floor has a unity not commonly found on other floors. Overall, the summer bridge program is a great way to become accustomed to the transition to Bowling Green State University, and I honestly would not know what I would have done without it.
- Lance, Junior, AYA Mathematics Education Major
Summer Bridge was initially what lured me to the ACTION program, and I wasn't disappointed! My participation in Summer Bridge allowed me to build my closest circle of friends here at BG, get acquainted with some parts of campus, and have all my personal belongings moved into my residence hall before the hectic freshman move-in day!
My research group was fantastic, I really built a close relationship with the professor that was conducting the research and I built positive relationships with students that are in many of my content classes. Talk about study buddies!
- Kayla, Senior, AYA Chemistry Education Major
At first I was upset that I was missing an entire month of my senior summer. But the Summer Bridge Program ended up being the highlight of my summer! I made so many new friends, great faculty, and had so much fun! I really liked having a month to become acquainted with college life. During the Summer Bridge Program I was able to meet a ton of professors at BGSU. Many of those same professors, I will actually have for a class. It was nice to get to know them and see the person behind the professor. Also, the ACTION staff members are a huge help in almost every aspect, from housing to scheduling. It is a great program!
- Megan, Junior, AYA Mathematics Education Major
Summer Bridge was such a beneficial experience. It enabled me to make friends that I know will last a lifetime. I was nervous to give up some of my summer, but now that I did it, I am so glad that I did. I made great friends and felt comfortable for classes in the fall. The most rewarding part of Summer Bridge was that I learned the importance of being a lifelong learner.
