Chapman Community at Kohl
“I have learned that you don’t need to stop world hunger to make a difference in the world. It feels just as good to help one person and know you have touched them forever.”
Chapman Learning Community @ Kohl Hall is a perfect choice for First Year and transfer students. We are the only award-winning Residential Learning Community just for students in their first year at BGSU. We accept all majors. Our 200 students represent 60 different majors ranging from biology to education, interior design to sport management, sociology to pre-law, along with many who are undecided/undeclared. You come from big cities (Detroit, Cleveland, Dayton, Cincinnati, Columbus, Toledo), from small towns, and from out of state & out of the country (NY, California, Texas, Washington D.C., Ilinois, Pennsylvania, Canada, Germany, Brazil).
Chapman @ Kohl is designed give you the experience of being in a small private college while still having the advantages of a big university. Your classes in our program are small, and you have easy and frequent access to your professors. We know your name and give you that extra help and support you need your first year here (a quarter of our students made the dean’ s list! ) You will live and learn together in Kohl Hall, a beautifully renovated residence hall in a great campus location with a brand new Commons Dining facility just steps away.
All 200 of you will meet together on Wednesdays for events several times a semester, and we take you off-campus for hands-on service-learning projects, trips, and classes. Besides the one-credit service-learning class, you are also eligible to take one or two general education classes reserved just for this program taught in Kohl Hall classrooms that seat 27 or less. These classes are suitable for any major, meet graduation requirements, and are taught by a dozen interdisciplinary faculty members whose offices are located in Kohl Hall. All your other classes you choose from any department or program on campus.
From the first day you move in, you get more than a T-shirt and a group photo: you feel part of something unique and important on campus. You’ ll become fast friends with each other and with our faculty. BGSU’ s big campus seems smaller when you belong to our award-winning community.
