Content Description: An attempt to reproduce every play from England and the United States in the 19th century. Also included are translations and adaptations of European plays. The microcard collection was issued until 1985 when it was replaced by two microfiche collections: Nineteenth Century American Drama and Nineteenth Century English Drama, also owned by the BGSU Libraries. The total collection includes copies of over 23,000 plays, including manuscripts, acting editions, and definitive published editions.
Arrangement: English and American plays are filed separately. Each set is in alphabetical order by author's name, if known, or by title, if the author's name is unknown. If a play was arranged or translated by somebody other than the author it is usually filed under the name of the arranger or translator.
1) Nineteenth-Century American Drama: A Finding Guide, by Don L. Hixon and Don A. Hennessee. (Jerome Library Reference PS 632 .H57). A list, by author and title, of the 4,500 American plays issued through 1977. Includes a subject index and a list of plays that include characters of specified ethnic or racial groups.
2) English Drama of the Nineteenth Century: An Index and Finding Guide, compiled & edited by James Ellis. (Jerome Library Reference PR 1271 .E53). A list of the 9,000 English plays issued through 1981. Includes a number of appendices, such as a list of women dramatists and a list of pseudonyms.
3) Readex Nineteenth Century English and American Plays Collections: Cumulated Checklist. (Jerome Library Reference PR 1271 .N55 v.1). A checklist of the American and English plays issued since the publication of the two bibliographies listed above up through mid-1987. The binder also includes checklists of the plays in the shipments for 1987 and 1988.
