Involvement with BGSU first-year initiatives is important to us. The Library First-Year Initiatives (F.Y.I.) Program strives to make meaningful connections with incoming students early in their academic career. The primary goals of this program are:

  • To introduce users to the physical layout of Jerome Library
  • To reduce student anxiety of a large research facility
  • To promote the availability of helpful services.

To accomplish these goals, the Library F.Y.I. Program is designed to work cooperatively with instructors and facilitators of the various first-year initiatives campus wide. The following services are available to instructors and facilitators of first-year programs:

  • Optional library modules, exercises and tutorials for students.
  • Consultation service with the First-Year Experience Librarian to assist with the design of library modules to fit the specific needs of your students.
  • Tour options for you to orient your class to Jerome Library

An in-person library instruction session for your students may be arranged if you have them complete a research-based assignment. If interested, please call (2-7901) or e-mail Colleen Boff at least a week in advance.

If you decide to use the Common Reading Experience selection with your students, you are encouraged to visit the Common Reading Experience web site hosted on the University Libraries' web site.

This program is designed to provide an initial orientation to library resources. More detailed instruction will be offered in courses such as English 112. Students will also be exposed to course-integrated library instruction as they progress in their studies beyond their first year.
