RefWorks - Importing from FirstSearch

 

FirstSearch Databases

ArticleFirst; ClasePeriodica; GPO Monthly Catalog; PapersFirst; ProceedingsFirst; WorldCat

  1. Enter the database of your choice.
  2. Perform search.
  3. Mark records of interest.
  4. Click on Marked Records tab.
  5. Click on Export.
  6. Choose RefWorks in Export to: section.
  7. Click on Export.
  8. A new browser window opens onto the RefWorks login page. (Be sure popup blocker allows popups for this page - if you cannot change popup settings, see below for alternate FirstSearch importing instructions.) Login.
  9. RefWorks will import your records – all you should see is the message stating Import completed – X records imported.

Alternate instructions for FirstSearch databases

  1. Enter the database of your choice.
  2. Perform search.
  3. Mark records of interest.
  4. Click on Marked Records tab.
  5. Click on Export.
  6. Choose "Text file" in "Export to" section
  7. Click on Export. Open the text file in Notepad or save it somewhere you will be able to find it again.
  8. Log in to RefWorks
  9. Click on References – Import
  10. Import Filter/Data Source:
    For WorldCat, choose Bowling Green State University
    For all other FirstSearch databases, choose OCLC FirstSearch
  11. Database:
    For WorldCat, choose "WorldCat [OCLC FirstSearch]"
    For all other FirstSearch databases, choose the database from which you exported records
  12. Import Reference into – optional. Choose a folder if you wish.
  13. Import Data from the following Text File – should be chosen.
  14. Use Browse button to find file you just saved.
  15. Click Import.
  16. Should see a message stating Import completed – X records imported.
