Infantry Units: 54th Ohio Volunteer Infantry

Infantry units were recruited from all over the state. Those represented in detail here are the ones recruited primarily from northwest Ohio counties and those whose members wrote to local newspapers. More information will be added as it becomes available.

This Regiment was organized at Camp Dennison, Ohio, October 1861 to serve three years. The original members (except veterans) were mustered out by detachments in November 1864 and the organization, composed of veterans and recruits, retained in service until August 15, 1865, when it was mustered out in accordance with orders from the War Department.

The records of this Regiment on file in the Adjutant-General's office, are so incomplete that it has been impossible to make a perfect roster. A number of names probably appear in companies in which they do not belong.

Some of the battles in which this unit participated include:

  • Shiloh, TN, April 6-7, 1862
  • Corinth, MS (Siege of), April 30, 1862
