Cavalry Units: 5th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry

Cavalry units were recruited from all over the state. Those represented in detail here are the ones recruited primarily from northwest Ohio counties and those whose members wrote to local newspapers. More information will be added as it becomes available.

This Regiment was organized at Camp Dick Corwin, Ohio, from September to November 1861, to serve three years; on February 26, 1862, the Regiment received orders to move; on March 1, 1862, the Regiment left Camp Dennison for Paducah, KY, reporting to Brigadier General W. T. Sherman. The original members (except veterans) were mustered out by detachments in November 1864, by reason of expiration of term of service until October 30, 1865, when it was mustered out in accordance with orders from the War Department.
