 Introduction and History

The National Association for Women in Education (NAWE) collection contains over seventy cubic feet of material dating from 1903 to 2000.  Proceedings, correspondence, financial documents, membership and committee files, audio-visual materials, and publications provide detailed resources for the institutional history of NAWE as well as the history of women in the field of higher education.

Represented are the files of each level of the Association’s organization structure.  These structural levels include the Executive Board, officers and appointees, the Executive Office, state and regional affiliates, divisions, and committees and task forces. Also included are groups pertaining to special functions such as the Association’s trust fund/foundation, conventions, conferences, symposiums and workshops, literary works, publications, and NAWE’s relationship with other associations and public agencies.

The collection was obtained in January 1982, largely through the efforts of Jo Ann Fley, NAWE Archivist, Barbara Keller, NAWE Secretary, JoAnne Trow, NAWE President, and Patricia Rueckel, Executive Director. The NAWE collection forms a major part of the National Student Affairs Archives.  Access to the collection is open to the public, and duplication is permitted for the purpose of conservation and research.

The National Association for Women in Education officially was established in 1916, with a membership of fifty women, following a series of meetings first initiated, in 1903, by Marion Talbot, Dean of Women at the University of Chicago, and Martha Foote Crow, Dean of Women at Northwestern University. This new professional association was named, National Association of Women Deans.  Its mission included the following: “to make clear to the public and governing boards of educational institutions, where girls and women are educated, the necessity of having in each of these institutions a competent and thoroughly trained woman as dean of women, or of girls; to establish a high standard of qualifications and to secure adequate professional recognition for the position of dean of women; and to study the problems common to all deans of women and to disseminate information valuable in the solution of them.”

In 1956, the membership voted to recognize both its own expanding membership base and the expanding role of women educators and changed its name to the National Association of Women Deans and Counselors. During the same year, state and regional associations were formally affiliated with NAWDC.  In 1973, the membership again voted to recognize the expanding role of women and changed its name to the National Association of Women Deans, Administrators and Counselors.   Membership was open to men in 1976.  A last name change occurred in 1991.  This time the membership voted to simplify its name to the National Association for Women in Education reflecting its emphasis on holistic and life-long human development. Its mission changed to being “dedicated to providing professional support for women educators through programs, services, advocacy, and scholarly publications.”

NAWE’s role as an advocate for the quality of women, minorities, and the handicapped has been an integral part of the Association’s mission and work.  Emphasis upon physical health programs and the educational guidance of youth dominated the first decades.  During the 1950s attention turned toward civil rights.  Since 1969, interest in the international and minority student has been addressed by the work of two distinct committees.  Support of academic and vocational programs, facilities and financial assistance of the handicapped is evidenced by NAWE’s appointment to the President’s Commission on the Employment of the Handicapped in 1963.  IN 1975, NAWE was one of the first organizations to pass a resolution of economic boycott against states which had not ratified the Equal Rights Amendment.

NAWE throughout its existence worked with other professional organizations to address such issues as vocational training, Greek life, alcohol and substance abuse, student freedoms and discipline, and professional standards.  Despite efforts to increase membership and funds through foundation-related activities during the 1990s, the organization had to disband during the Summer of 2000.

Record Group/ Series Description

The NAWE collection is comprised of twelve Record Groups: Administrative Files; Committee and Task Force Files; Conferences/Workshops/Symposium/Institutes; Executive Office Files; Foundation (Kathryn Sisson Phillips Trust); Inter-Association Activities; Officers and Appointees; Publications; Sections and Divisions; State and Regional Associations; Audio-Visuals; and Scrapbooks and Oversize Items.

Record Group: Administrative Files

The Administrative Files are very comprehensive and provide details on NAWE’s organizational development and all business conducted. This record group includes the following record series: Bylaws (1917-2000), Officer Handbooks and Manuals (1958-1999), Policy Statements (1958-1982), Leadership Rosters (1936-2000), and Executive Board minutes and reports (1922-2000).

Record Group: Committee and Task Force Files

The Committee and Task Force Files are arranged alphabetically by the name of the committee or task force.  The committees represent the internal activities of the organization as well as special projects and studies. The files vary in completeness and range in dates from 1926 to 2000.

Record Group: Conferences/Workshops/Symposium/Institutes

Planning and evaluation documents, programs, and proceedings for the Annual Conferences, the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders, Women in Higher Education International Conferences, and regional workshops are found in the Conferences/Workshops/Symposium/Institutes record group.  The annual conference files date from the first regional meeting of women deans in 1903 to the last conference held in 2000.  Conference business meeting minutes and reports date from 1903 to 1979. Conference Yearbooks which include all papers presented and discussions held date from 1923 to 1937.  The National Conference for College Women Student Leaders was established by NAWE in 1983 and meetings were held until 2000.  The Women of Distinction Awards ceremony was held during these conferences.

Record Group: Executive Office Files

The Executive Office Files include the Executive Director’s correspondence, dating from 1918 to 1999, and membership records including directories, handbooks, correspondence and reports, dating from 1919 to 1999. Also included are subject files, including documents on the purchases/leases of the national office, histories of NAWE including its emblem and logo, strategic planning files, and the NAWE website.

Record Group: Foundation

Foundation files document the fund-raising activities of NAWE and largely pertain to the establishment, management, and growth of the Kathryn Sisson Phillips Trust, an endowed fund created in 1973 and named for NAWE’s first president. The Fund has supported graduate studies research, professional development activities, and the Ruth Strang Research Award.  Trust agreements and policies, board minutes and reports, and correspondence date from 1973 to 1999.  Financial statements and investment reports date from 1972 to 1998.

Record Group: Inter-association Activities

Inter-Association Activities files document the interactions between NAWE and other professional associations. The files are arranged alphabetically by the name of the organization and date from 1915 to 1999.  NAWE was an active participant with many organizations to achieve similar goals involving women and education.  These files document through correspondence, reports, and publications NAWE’s cooperative activities.

Record Group: Officer and Appointees

The Officers and Appointees record group documents the correspondence of the presidents, vice-presidents, secretary, treasurer, members-at-large, editors, and other appointees. The president, vice-presidents, and editor files are arranged by name and chronologically. The rest of the files are arranged by office and chronologically. The files date from 1926 to 1998.

Record Group: Publications

Publications include a thesis and dissertations, 1931-1974, documenting the history of NAWE; various monographs, pamphlets and articles published by NAWE or written by NAWE members, 1918-1999; NAWE newsletters, 1927-1999; and, the NAWE Journal, 1938-2000.  This record group documents the research conducted and supported by NAWE.  It also included publications which illustrate NAWE’s activities and programs.

Record Group: Section and Division

The Section and Divisions files represent the special professional interests of NAWE. The early Sections reflected the type of educational institution, e.g. universities, junior colleges, secondary institutions, in which women were employed. By 1983, the Sections were disbanded and Divisions took their place.  The Division structure was oriented not toward place of employment, but rather toward the type of professional field in which members were engaged.  Divisions created in 1983 included Administration, Counseling and Individual Development, Activities and Services, Teaching and Research, Government Agency and Special Programs, and Continuing Education.  Most of these files include the correspondence and reports of the chairs and date from 1928 to 1996.

Record Group: State and Regional Associations

The State and Regional Associations record group includes handbooks and correspondence from the Vice President in charge of the states and regions, 1924 to 1998, as well as files from the individual states and regions.  The state and region files include correspondence, minutes, reports, and conference files, and are arranged alphabetically by state and region.  These files vary in dates, but span the time period from 1921 to 2001.

Record Group-Audio Visuals

Audio-Visuals include photographs, tape recordings, and video recordings.  The photographs document individual officers and activities during conferences. Also included is a slide program on the early history and women of NAWE.  These photographs date from the 1930s through the 1990s. Audio tapes are arranged chronologically, include conference and symposium speakers, and date from 1973 to 1994.  The video tapes are also arranged chronologically and largely include women interviewed for an oral history project conducted between 1991 and 1994.

Record Group-Scrapbooks and Oversize Items

The Scrapbooks and Oversize Items record group includes scrapbooks documenting the 1937 Conference in New Orleans, executive and committee meetings, sample mailings to members, and Conference activities, 1982-1991.  The oversize items include NAWE pins and logos, T-shirts and canvas bags, banners, and panel boards depicting the history and activities of NAWE.
