Introduction

The records of the Silver Cross Circle of King's Daughters of Bowling Green, Ohio, cover the years 1917-1985, including minutes, correspondence, financial records, newsclippings, and printed material.

The records were donated and transferred to the Center for Archival Collections in May 1982 through the cooperation of Mrs. Helen Montgomery and Mrs. Lillie Sloan. There are no restrictions on the use of this collection. The researcher will note that the Center for Archival Collections also has a collection of State Board records (MS-189). This register was prepared by Jamie Dickson in March 1983 and revised by Marilyn Levinson, Curator of Manuscripts in January 1992.

Agency History

he International Order of the King's Daughters and Sons was founded on January 13, 1886 by Margaret Bottome in New York City, with a membership of ten women. It combined a three-fold program of religion, education and philanthropy in order to train its members for Christian Service. The organization supports ministries for the aging, handicapped, and the underprivileged.

The Ohio Branch maintains the Maplecrest Home, their statewide project, in Bucyrus, Ohio. It was founded in 1921 as a home for orphaned or dependent girls, and was converted to a home for elderly women in 1963. The Ohio Branch also sponsored students to summer educational camps at Rock Ledge Inn, which was located in Ottawa County, Portage Township, between 1900 and 1940.

The Silver Cross Circle of King's Daughters of Bowling Green, Ohio was organized on January 21, 1907 by Mrs. Hulbert Rogers, wife of Dr. E.E. Rogers, with a membership of ten women. In addition to their support of Rock Ledge Inn and Maplecrest Home, the Circle did many little things for the community of Bowling Green. They provided eyeglasses to many children, layettes for needy mothers, clothing for the poor, medical examinations, baskets of food, and parties at the Wood County Home. The Circle is still very active in Bowling Green.

Scope and Content

The records of the Silver Cross Circle of King's Daughters contains material that is illustrative of this service-oriented organization. The minutes (1922-1937, 1959-1976) are the strength of the collection because they offer an intimate view of the workings of various committees within the Circle, with information on programs and finances. A list of the past leaders, from 1907 to 1982 is also included. The gaps in the minutes from 1907-1921, 1938-1958, and 1977-1982 does weaken the overall research value of this series.

The correspondence consists mainly of notes expressing thanks to the Circle for small services rendered, such as clothing donated to a needy family. There are pamphlets on Rock Ledge Inn and Maplecrest Home in scattered holdings from 1929-1980. Convention programs and pamphlets about the rules of the Order and the Chautauqua Department constitute the printed materials found in the collection.
