"30,000 Witness Opening of University Union," excerpt from the Bee Gee News, April 15, 1958:

Hundreds of spectators lined the University plaza last Friday morning to watch Mrs. Ralph W. McDonald cut the orange and brown ribbon strung across the University Union's main entrance and thus officially open the multi-million dollar structure. The ceremony was heralded by a rifle salute and the firing of a rocket which signaled the campus that the building was open. An estimated 30,000 persons attended the three-day ceremonies.
