Alumni and Benefactors

Robert Thompson ('55) and Ellen Bowen Thompson ('54), for whom the Bowen-Thompson Student Union is named, provided the lead gift for the renovation of the Student Union beginning in 1999. The Thompsons were teachers who started a small paving company with an uncle, Willfred McCully, in 1959. This company grew into a corporation that was sold in 1999. The Thompsons became nationally known for distributing $128 million dollars in profit-sharing to their company’s 550 employees as a reward for their hard work and dedication. The Thompsons also endowed numerous scholarships for BGSU students, including the Robert and Ellyn Bowen Thompson Scholarship. Robert has served on the BGSU Foundation Board of Directors.
