Biology Undergraduate Scholarships

 

Below is a list of scholarships available to undergradautes in biological sciences at BGSU. These scholarships represent generous contributions by alumni, parents, and faculty and are designed to recognize excellence in academic scholarship and promote research by undergraduates. Application and selection for these awards occurs each spring. Application forms are available at the Department of Biological Sciences office on the second floor of the Life Sciences Building as well as in pdf format on the Biological Sciences website each spring (see below).

Sophomore:

Biology Alumni Sophomore Scholarship (est. 1984; Modified 1990)

        The Biology Alumni Sophomore Scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time biology major who will be a sophomore during the academic year scholarship funds are used. Requirements: 3.0 minimum GPA and demonstrated potential for a successful undergraduate experience at BGSU.

 


Sophomore or Junior:

Joseph J. and Marie P. Schedel Scholarship *# (est. 1991)

        The Schedel Biology Scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time biology major who will be a sophomore or junior during the academic year scholarship funds are used. Requirements: 3.0 minimum GPA and demonstrated interest in environmental concerns.

 


Sophomore, Junior, or Senior:

Multicultural Student Scholarship *# (est. 1990)

        The Multicultural Student Scholarship is awarded annually to a minority student biology major who will be a sophomore, junior, or senior during the academic year scholarship funds are used. Requirements: 3.0 minimum GPA and evidence of leadership potential through participation in departmental or university activities.

 

T. Richard Fisher Biology Scholarship *# (est. 1990)

        The T. Richard Fisher Biology Scholarship is awarded annually to a biology major who is interested in ecology or the plant sciences. Requirements: 3.0 minimum GPA and 30 semester hours completed at BGSU.

 

Harold E. Tinnappel Scholarship *# (est. 1971)

        The Tinnappel Scholarship is awarded annually to a continuing, full-time student who by an outstanding record has indicated a potential for a high level of success in the sciences. Preference will be given to an applicant who has a vocational interest in conservation, horticulture, or botany. The scholarship is renewable.

 

Steven S. Steel Scholarship *# (est. 1996)

        The Steel Scholarship is awarded annually to a biology or chemistry major who will be a sophomore, junior, or senior during the academic year scholarship funds are used. Requirements: sophomores must have a 2.0 minimum GPA; juniors and seniors must have a 2.5 minimum GPA. Recipients must complete an off-campus internship experience; applications must include a description of how the intership will assist the student in his/her academic endeavors. A final report or journal must be submitted upon completion of the internship experience.

 


Junior, or Senior:

Ralph V. McKinney, Jr.-Eloise Whitwer Scholarship *# (est. 1992)

        The McKinney-Whitwer Scholarship is awarded annually to a biology major who will be a junior or senior during the academic year scholarship funds are used. The recipient will have demonstrated significant commitment and exhibited promise of future distinction in a career in the biological sciences. Additionally, the recipient shall have demonstrated an understanding of the importance of helping others by a record of involvement in university or community activities.

 

Cynthia Collin Stong Marine Biology Scholarship **# (est. 2003)

        The Cynthia Collin Stong Marine Biology Scholarship is awarded annually to up to three marine biology students accepted into an approved summer field program at a marine station. Preference given to students enrolling in the 10-week Gulf Coast Research Laboratory program. Applicants' academic record and potential to contribute knowledge and experience to others in marine program, as well as financial need, will be considered. A recipient of the scholarship must submit a written final report and must make a formal presentation to current and/or potential BGSU marine biology students about the benefits of the experience.

 

Barry R. Morstain Scholarship *# (est. 1998)

        The Barry R. Morstain Scholarship is awarded annually to a biology major who will be a junior or senior during the academic year scholarship funds are used. Strong preference will be given to minority students. Requirement: 3.0 minimum GPA.

 

Waldo and Evelyn Steidtmann Scholarship *# (est. 1983)

        The Steidtman Scholarship is awarded annually to a biology major who will be a junior or senior during the academic year scholarship funds are used. Preference will be given to students with an interest in the plant sciences or environmental concerns. Requirements: 3.3 minimum GPA and 30 semester hours completed at BGSU.

 

James D. Graham Memorial Scholarship *# (est. 1984)

        The James D. Graham Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a an outstanding biology major who will be a junior or senior during the academic year scholarship funds are used. The scholarship is non-renewable. Preference will be given to students with an interest in cellular and molecular biology. Requirements: 3.3 minumum GPA and 30 semester hours completed at BGSU.

 

h4>Dennis R. Whitmore Memorial Scholarship *# (est. 1987)         The Dennis R. Whitmore Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a declared microbiology or biology major who will be a junior or senior during the academic year scholarship funds are used. The award is designed for a student with a commitment to microbiology or molecular biology. Requirements: 3.3 minimum GPA and 30 semester hours completed at BGSU.

 

Jean Pasakarnis Buchanan Scholarship *# (est. 1987)

        The Jean Pasakarnis Buchanan Scholarship is awarded annually to a biology or medical technology major who will be a junior or senior during the academic year scholarship funds are used. Requirements: 3.3 minimum GPA and 30 semester hours completed at BGSU.

 

Marjorie Schreck Carlson Scholarship # (est. 1986)

        Awarded through the College of Arts and Sciences to a full-time female student enrolled in a recognized paramedical in the College. Requirements: 3.0 minimum GPA, permanent resident in the state of Ohio, and a demonstrated financial need.

The Marjorie Conrad Peatee Scholarship # (est. 1998)

        Awarded annually through the College of Arts and Sciences to a biology or chemistry pre-medical or allied professions student who will be a junior or senior during the academic year scholarship funds are used. Requirements: 3.4 minimum GPA, demonstrated financial need, 500-1,000 word essay describing career aspirations.

 

Dr. Suzanne K. Miller Undergraduate Research Assistantships *# (est. 1998)

        Up to ten assistantships are awarded annually to biology majors who will be juniors or seniors during the year the assistantship is completed. Assistants receive $550 compensation for one semester (10 hrs./week) as a research apprentice with a faculty member in the department. Requirement: enrollment in Biol. 401 (Introduction to Research) during the semester of the assistantship (min. one hour credit).

 


Senior:

Dawson S. and Sylvia A. Patterson Scholarship # (est. 1979)

        The Patterson Scholarship is awarded annually to a biology or chemistry pre-medicine major who will be a senior during the academic year scholarship funds are used.

 

Greene Family Pre-Med Scholarship # (est. 1986)

        Awarded annually through the College of Arts and Sciences to a full-time, pre-medical student who will be a senior during the academic year scholarship funds are used. Selection of recipient will be based on recommendations from pre-medical advisers in the Departments of Biology and Chemistry. Requirement: 3.5 minimum GPA.

 

Reyman Memorial Scholarship # (est. 1997)

        Awarded through the College of Arts and Sciences to a biology or chemistry pre-medical major. The recipient must be applying to or accepted by a medical or osteopathy school. Requirement: 3.0 minimum College GPA.

Outstanding Senior Award in Arts & Sciences # (est. 1982)
Outstanding Junior Award in Arts & Sciences # (est. 1982)
Outstanding Senior Award in Education # (est. 1982)
Outstanding Junior Award in Education # (est. 1982)

        Small monetary awards given to students with the highest GPA (minimum of 3.5 in each of the above categories). Awards need not be given if there are no eligible candidates. Outstanding senior awards are given to students with at least 90 semester hours completed and 20 hours of biology courses. Outstanding junior awards are given to students with at least 60 semester hours completed and 16 hours of biology courses. All candidates must have completed two semesters at BGSU. Students who have received the Outstanding Junior Award are ineligible to receive the Outstanding Senior Award.

 

Beta Beta Beta Award # (est. 1952)

        Small monetary award presented by Beta Beta Beta, the biological sciences honorary society, recognizing a senior or graduate student member who has given outstanding service to the society and who has made a distinctive contribution to the field of biology or to the local chapter. Requirements: 3.0 minimum GPA in all coursework and 3.5 minimum GPA in biology.

 

Alpha Epsilon Delta Award # (est. 1986)

        Small monetary award presented by the Ohio Delta Chapter of Alpha Epsilon Delta, the health sciences pre-professional honor society, to a senior member who has provided outstanding service to the society and who has made a distinctive contribution to the local chapter. Requirement: 3.25 minimum GPA in all coursework and 3.5 minimum GPA in required pre-professional courses.

 

Karlin Award *# (est. 1968)

        Small monetary award given annually to a junior biology major who is involved in departmental activities and nominated by Biological Sciences faculty members. Requirement: 3.5 minimum GPA.

 


# Recipients are recognized at the annual Honors and Awards Banquet of the College of Arts and Sciences.
* Selection of the candidates for these scholarships is coordinated by the Undergraduate Committee of the Dept. of Biological Sciences in the spring preceeding the academic year in which the award is made. Eligible students are encouraged to complete an application form.
