Visa and Residence Permit Information

If you are going to Salzburg for the academic year, you will apply for an Austrian Residence Permit.

You will assemble and submit documents to your program director in advance of departure. You will actually apply for the permit in Austria, after you arrive. Your program director will guide you through the pre-departure and on-site processes.

If you are going to Salzburg for one semester, you will apply for a National D Student Visa.

Plan to apply for your visa at least 4 to 5 weeks before you depart for Austria. Your program director will advise you on the application process and provide you with the following documents:

  1. A letter from the BGSU AYA program, confirming your room and board.
  2. A pdf of an email from the Austrian interior ministry, which confirms that the BGSU letter is sufficient proof of material and financial support.
  3. A letter from the University of Salzburg, confirming that you will be registered there during your time abroad.

As a student, you are permitted to mail in your visa application materials. To find out which consulate you should mail your materials to, visit this page.
