The Tempest will be set on an unnamed island. Some aspects of the production will be inspired by elements of Balinese theatre -- masks, shadow puppets, music, etc.

But Prospero's island most definitely is NOT Bali. That's important to remember, because it would be unfair to present production elements based upon my highly filtered, subjective memories as authentic representations of Balinese wayang instead of "kreasi baru" (new creations).

Also, by not pinning the production down geographically and culturally, we gain the freedom to play with different ideas and images. Yet ... I'm finding more and more of my solutions are being inspired by Indonesian wayang -- negotiating all this will be tricky.
