Securing Ports & Services
The BGSU Information Security Team periodically monitors the administrative network to identify vulnerabilities and risks. This helps protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information systems necessary for the academic mission of BGSU.
Computer systems connected to the network advertise open ports and services. Attackers often perform reconnaissance on these services, research existing vulnerabilities and use them to gain access to unauthorized information.
Solid administration practices of these networked systems is imperative. It is important to review these services and verify that they updated to address vulnerabilities and disabled if not necessary for academic purposes.
The following links provide additional detail and information regarding secure administration of these services.
SANS is a leading security training organization. For CyberSecurity Awareness Month 2009, they listed common ports and services along with information to help properly secure and configure.
