VCR and DVDVCR Removal from Classroom Technology Cabinets

VCR units will be removed from Classroom Technology cabinets at the end of the Spring 2011 semester.  This will include the removal of VCR units as well as the removal of DVDVCR units.  As manufacturers have begun to reduce or end production of VCR units, obtaining quality equipment is difficult if not impossible and repair is cost prohibitive and many times parts are not even available.

Therefore, plans are underway to remove these units from the standard classroom technology cabinet inventory and to encourage transition of instructional materials in VHS format to another available format.  Without the resources to properly maintain equipment, it is possible that VCR units could damage VHS tapes, leaving the owner without that resource for good.  The current plan is encouraging the transfer of media and preparation ahead of the possibility of this type of situation.

It will be possible for instructors to check out a VCR player for use in a classroom through December 31, 2011.  Instructors may check out a VCR player from CTS in 118 Olscamp Hall or they may also contact CTS to arrange to have the equipment available in a specific classroom for their instructional purposes.

DVD's may continue to be used in the classrooms by utilizing the DVD player available in the classroom technology cabinet's computer.

Classrooms that are not equipped with a computer in the classroom (such as classrooms in Hanna, Mosley) will continue to be equipped to TV & VCR equipment.

In order to prepare for the removal of the VCR units, instructors utilizing VHS formatted instructional materials are asked to consider the following alternatives:

  • CTS will provide VCR units to those using VHS formatted material.  Please note, this option will only be available through December 31, 2011.
  • non-copyrighted VHS material may be transferred to DVD format.
  • copyrighted VHS material will need to be replaced with a legal DVD formatted copy.

Please contact the Technology Support Center (TSC) at 2-0999, with any questions or concerns regarding the VCR removal plan or alternatives for VHS formatted instructional materials.
