Preferred Name Change

 

The following guide will walk you through the process of selecting a preferred name for your account.  This name will be used in place of your full legal name becoming the name displayed on all messages sent out through your BGSU Email.  After completing the steps outlined below, your new preferred name will be used starting after one hour.  

To begin the process of adding a preferred name, go to MyBGSU and log in.

Once you are logged in, you will need to select "Update Personal Information" from either the Employee Self-Service or the Student Services section of the left hand bar depending on your relationship with the university. 

Now you will need to choose the option to update names under personal information.  Here is what the button looks like as a student and as a faculty or staff.

If your primary name is incorrect, follow the steps on these pages to update it.  Students - Faculty and Staff

On the page that comes up, you will see a list of all of your current names.  If you already have a preferred name that you are happy with, then you can close this window.  If you would like to edit a preferred name already listed, select the edit button the line listing that name.  If you do not currently have a preferred name, select the button labeled "Add a New Name."

Fill out each section, making sure to select "Preferred" as the Name Type.  You can enter a date in the future when the new name will be used as well.  Select save once you are finished.
