What happens after I am admitted to UPAS?
You will attend a required Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) program. Your academic advisor will help you select classes that will provide an appropriate foundation and level of challenge. You'll also begin to form a plan that will include strategies to strengthen any areas of academic weakness. [back to top]
What are my obligations as a UPAS student?
You must sign a contract that states you are committed to working toward academic success at BGSU. Your advisor will help you develop a individualized academic plan and will communicate with you frequently through email and the PMA newsletter. You must schedule regular appointments with your advisor to ensure you remain focused in your academic program. Your commitment to UPAS is for a minimum of one semester. If you meet all of the contract requirements, you will be officially admitted to BGSU and may transfer into an appropriate major or Pre-Major Advising (if you are still exploring majors) during your second semester. Are there “special” courses I need to take because I am in UPAS? Technically no, but this will depend on your placement results in English and Mathematics. Lower placement will require enrollment in “developmental” courses that may not count towards graduation requirements. Also, if you have an articulation deficiency (college prep requirements not completed in high school, such as foreign language) this may need to be addressed by taking a bridge course the first semester. What are my “Bridge Experience” choices? Your choice of “bridge experiences” varies. Most students choose the ACEN 1000 course or other BGSU classes that you can discuss with your advisor. Participation in the Chapman Community at Kohl is also considered a UPAS bridge experience. Please contact one of the UPAS academic advisors with further questions. [back to top]
Do I have to live in a special Residence Hall? No. All new UPAS students may choose from any residence hall using the same process as any BGSU student. Student who choose to live in the Chapman Community at Kohl may count this as their UPAS "bridge experience." [back to top]
In my first semester can I take courses towards my major? This depends on the major and available courses offered in the fall and spring terms. The same applies to all BGSU first-year students. [back to top]
How often do I need to meet with my advisor? Monthly. This will result in a minimum of four advising appointments during the semester. The first time you meet, you’ll discuss your schedule, possible academic majors of interest, set goals and schedule future meetings. All other meetings will be spent on discussing class progress, course scheduling for the next term, final progress, etc. [back to top]
Do I need to use my BGSU webmail account? Yes. Your BG email is your primary email address and the only email address you can use to access the BGSU web portal, “My BGSU”. [back to top]
What is “My BGSU”? The BGSU web portal is an online interactive site that allows you to access and monitor BGSU information and coursework. It will allow you to view your registration, room and meal information along with accessibility to see Bursar fees. Other options will enable access to online academic content, discussion boards and chat rooms to enhance your connection to the BGSU community. [back to top]
What are mid-term progress reports? Using the “successNet” system, BGSU instructors provide early alert, mid-term grade reports, and regular progress reports for all students. These reports are available for students to view on MyBGSU under the “My Grade” link. [back to top]
Do parents (or guardians) get copies of mid-term reports? No. However, parents and/or guardians are permitted to contact the UPAS academic advisors about their student’s progress as part of the UPAS contract. Typical communication is done through a phone call or email. However, we strongly encourage parents/guardians to communicate with their student prior to being in contact with UPAS advisors. Are my parents and/or guardians sent email updates? In the Fall term only, weekly email updates are sent to all those parents/guardians who have provided our staff with active email addresses. The messages are general statements related to important dates and pertinent academic announcements that all UPAS students receive. These weekly email updates do not provide specific information about individual students. Parents/guardians requiring additional information may email or call their student’s UPAS advisor. After my first year, can I take summer classes at BGSU or elsewhere? You are able to enroll in summer courses at BGSU. If you plan to take courses elsewhere, you must consult with your UPAS academic advisor and talk with a representative in our Transfer Credit Evaluation (Registration and Records) office to identify which courses are equivalent for BGSU course credit. What is next after earning Good Standing status? You need to transfer out of UPAS into a particular college to pursue a major or transfer to Pre-Major Advising if you are still deciding on a major. Your advisor will go over the details regarding transferring into an appropriate major. Keep in mind that, although UPAS requires you to have a 2.0 to transfer out, many majors at BGSU have competitive entrance requirements and require higher grade point averages to be considered. These include business, nursing, teaching professions, sport management, and others. More information is available in the BGSU undergraduate catalog. [back to top]
Who is my UPAS Advisor?
To find your advisor's name and contact information, go to MyBGSU. Under "Student Services" select the "My Advisor" link. If there is no academic advisor listed or you have difficulty accessing the site, contact Advising Services at 419-372-8943, or email firstname.lastname@example.org. The Advising Services office is located at 101 University Hall. To schedule an appointment with your UPAS advisor, call 419-372-8943.
What kinds of classes will I take?
You'll enroll in four or five classes (12-15 credit hours) during your first semester at BGSU. In addition to English composition (GSW), you will take two other classes that fulfill general education requirements at BGSU. Depending on the major you are planning to pursue, you may also be taking a math course. Based on your ACT reading score, you may be required to enroll in a reading/study skills course (ACEN 1000). You may also participate in one of the first-year bridge experiences that will help you build the confidence and skills you need to succeed at BGSU. [back to top]
Will all my classes count toward graduation?
Based on your placement tests, you may be enrolled in an English or mathematics class that does not count toward graduation but will strengthen your preparation for college-level work. All other courses will count toward graduation as long as you achieve satisfactory grades. Your academic advisor will help you select appropriate courses that fit your interests and goals.
The courses listed below are BGSU requirements, regardless of program or major.
• General Studies Writing (GSW = English Composition) - based on placement exam
GSW 1100 - 5 credits
GSW 1110 - 3 credits
GSW1120 - 3 credits
NOTE: all students must successfully complete GSW 1120 in order to graduate
• Math - requirement depends on placement and major eventually declared
• In addition to GSW 1120, 8 additional courses of "general education curriculum" are required. This is the "BG Perspective" curriculum - click here for more information on "BG Perspective"
• ACEN 1000 - Reading & Study Skills course may be required based on ACT or SAT scores
