Student Spotlight - Ali Miller
Ali Miller is a senior majoring in Visual Communication Technology from LaGrange, Ohio. She completed her second required internship with Discovery Communications in Washington, D.C., during the spring semester of her junior year, where she served as a Strategic Marketing and Digital Media Intern. Ali’s positive attitude, hard work, and dedication to the company paid off—she was also able to complete additional internship experiences with Discovery Communications in Chicago, Illinois, where she further developed her already broad skill set. Following graduation, Ali hopes to move back to Chicago to potentially work with Discovery Communications as a Brand Marketer. Below, you’ll find Ali’s responses to some of our questions regarding her internship with Discovery Communications, advice for current students seeking an internship or co-op, and why she believes every student at BGSU should find ways to gain practical career experience!
How did you acquire your internship experience?
I found my internship by completing online research and looking for information and positions at the companies I was most interested in.
What sorts of projects or tasks did you work on or complete during your internship?
Through my internship, I designed flyers promoting Discovery Education's services to send to VIP Superintendents. I also designed slideshows to be translated into all of our overseas-supported languages that would be posted on all of Discovery's websites.
What skills or other valuable insights did you gain from your experience?
I truly bettered my time management skills and learned how to handle my stress. I also narrowed down what I would like to do upon graduation and realized which career I would be happiest in.
What advice do you have for student who are hoping to secure or are planning to complete and internship/co-op experience?
Don't be afraid to apply for companies that seem out of site, because they are not. As long as you are willing to work hard and have great enthusiasm, and present them with an excellent resume, your potential is endless.
Why do you think it is important for BGSU students to participate in internship or co-op experiences?
It is important for students to participate in internships and co-op experiences because you truly do learn things that you simply can't in the classroom. You also have the potential to network and open doors for a better future.
How will you take what you learned throughout your internship and apply it toward future career goals?
My internship helped me immensely in regards to deciding the area of student in which I hope to someday work. The experience also taught me that to get anywhere you need to work hard, and that dedication to a position does pay off in the end. I've learned that once I've done enough, I need to do more, and that pushing myself will lead to my desired outcome. I wouldn't be who I am today without my internship experience.
