CTS Response Time for Classroom Technology Cabinet Inquiries

Classroom Technology Services (CTS) is pleased to announce the addition of a Service Level Agreement providing an anticipated response time to faculty experiencing problems with classroom technology equipment available in BGSU Main Campus classroom cabinets.

Any faculty member experiencing difficulty with equipment available in a classroom technology cabinet is invited to call 2-9400 for assistance.  An CTS staff member will respond to the classroom within the time frame outlined on the CTS Service level agreement map at:  http://www.bgsu.edu/downloads/cio/file89996.pdf

  Email Outage to Occur

On Dec 21, 22 and 23 from 4-5 a.m. portions of the BGSU email system will experience an outage in order to complete system upgrades.

During these times, users may find they are unable to access the BGSU email system for periods of up to 30 minutes.  Any email received during this time period will be delivered and available for users once they again gain access to the system.  This outage will affect user access from all email clients including OWA (Outlook Web Access), Outlook and Entourage.

Each individual BGSU email account holder will only be affected on one of the three days, and users can expect to receive specifics on what day they will be affected in an email sent to their BGSU account the week prior to the scheduled outage.

  FMS Open Forum - Wed Dec 8

A FMS Open Forum is scheduled for Wed Dec 8 at 11 a.m. in 113 Olscamp (1011 Firelands) and all faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend.

This open forum will introduce the FMS 9.1 project and team members, outline the modules involved, detail project milestones and timelines and will highlight new features available in 9.1.  Further information about the FMS 9.1 project is available at www.bgsu.edu/v9.1.

The OnBase document imaging system available at dim.bgsu.edu will be unavailable on Wednesday, November 24 from 12:01 - 2 a.m. in order to complete system maintenance. During the time of this outage, both the web site and the desktop application will be unavailable for use. Applications dependent on OnBase that will be unavailable during this outage period include invoice viewing through PeopleSoft FMS.

  Tech Trends Event - Hunter Grant Professional Lecture

As part of the Tech Trends series, Hunter Grant Professional Animator will be providing a presentation on Friday, November 19 at 7:30 p.m. in 117 Olscamp Hall.

Hunter is a BGSU Alumni working in the animation industry for over 10 years.  He is credited with such titles as Barnyard (film), World of Warcraft, and Starcraft 2 (games).  Currently he works at Blizzard Entertainment under the title of Senior Cinematic Artist.  

During his presentation, Hunter will provide practical advice to students by describing what he did at BG as a student, how he entered the animation industry, and how he got to where he is today.  All interested students, staff, faculty, and community members are invited to attend.

Blackboard Mobile Learn now available

Blackboard Mobile Learn is now available for use in accessing your Blackboard course and organization content using iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone and Android/Blackberry devices.  For information on Blackboard Mobile Learn compatible devices, configuration details, connection information and instructions on how to download and use the application, please see the Mobile Learn web page.


This version of Blackboard Mobile Learn is a replacement of the iPhone/iPod Touch service with Blackboard Sync.  Apple device users who currently use Bb Sync will need to switch to Blackboard Mobile Learn by December 15, 2010.  


The Blackboard Mobile Learn application is provided at no cost, however BGSU will not be responsible for any fees incurred by a user for mobile phone or internet service provider charges associated with the use of Blackboard Mobile Learn.

CSS and HCM Upgraded to v9

As of Monday, October 11 the PeopleSoft CSS and HCM modules have been upgraded from version 8.9 and are running version 9.


Users may access CSS using the same URL as used in version 8.9 however, users are advised to update the bookmarks in order to be sure to access CSS v9.

Fall Break Schedule Changes/Outages

The following changes in schedules will occur over Fall Break: 

  • The Tech Lab in 247 Technology will be closed on Sat Oct 9. 
  • TSC in 110 Hayes Hall will be open normal hours on Sat Oct 9 and Sun Oct 10. They will be open Mon Oct 11 and Tues Oct 12 from 7:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. for walk-in and phone support. Additionally they will be open 6 p.m. - midnight for phone support. 
  • StudentTech will be open Mon Oct 11 and Tues Oct 12 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. They will be closed on Sun Oct 11. 
  • Listserv at lists.bgsu.edu will be unavailable on Mon Oct 11 from 4-6 a.m. in order to complete system maintenance.

From 5 p.m. on Fri Oct 8 through 7 a.m. on Mon Oct 11 access to CSS self-service appliations such as Student Center, Faculty Center, Class Search/Browse Course Catalog, View My Paycheck, My Compensation History and Manager Information as well as CSS applications used in the back offices will be unavailable in order to complete the upgrade to version 9.

    • PGP - During the time of this outage users will not be able to search the keyserver for new keys to encrypt files.  Users will be able to use whole disk encryption (WDE) and will be able to encrypt and decrypt files local to their system.
    • SNAP survey software - During the time of this outage, users will be unable to take, create or access surveys that begin with a http://survey.bgsu.edu url.

Academic Exam & Class Evaluation Scanning service available

The Academic Exam & Class Evaluation Scanning (AECES) services will be accessible to faculty and staff through the Technology Support Center (TSC) in 110 Hayes Hall beginning Monday, August 23.

AECES provides scanning services for academic tests, surveys, and evaluations completed using "bubble" sheets.  Test scanning and scoring services previously accessed through Data Control in 301 Hayes Hall will now be available through the Academic Exam & Class Evaluation Scanning service in TSC.

The AECES web site (http://www.bgsu.edu/its/tsc/self-help/page84648.html) provides information about drop off location and hours available for drop off, access to the form to use for submitting items as well as information regarding the means used to distribute scanning results.

  Query Migrations to CSS HCM v9 - Session Signups Available

The CSS HCM upgrade to v9 on October 11 will have an impact on queries that have been developed using the current CSS and HCM v8.9.  Field name revisions and/or changes in location of information in v9 may affect the results provided by a public or private query.

In order to provide users with an opportunity to test queries prior to the cutover date, CSS HCM v9 Update Query Validation Monitored Lab Sessions have been established.  During these sessions project team members will be available for consultation in query validation.

All who use any v8.9 developed queries are encouraged to validate that the v8.9 query will work properly in v9 CSS and HCM.

All faculty and staff members are asked to review their current Business Address information as displayed in MyBGSU.  It is recommended that any requests for revision to the data as shown be submitted as soon as possible in order to provide accurate data being available in the BGSU Search and the On-line Directory as well as the BGSU phone directory.

To review your current Business Address information, login to MyBGSU and select the Update Personal Information link available in the left navigation.  Select My Addresses and review the information presented.  Any revisions to the Business Address information shown may be requested by using the form available at: http://www.bgsu.edu/its/tsc/page9432.html

Academic Test Scanning 

The BGSU mainframe will be decommissioned as of June 30. As a result, the faculty evaluation / academic test scanning software and scanner available at 301 Hayes Hall will also be transitioning.

In order to complete network upgrades, intermittent network outages will occur from 11p.m. - 12 a.m. on Tuesday, June 1.  These brief outages will affect all residence halls including any wireless networks in the residence halls.

There will also be upgrades that will affect all Administrative computers on campus from 12:01 - 1 a.m. on Wednesday, June 2.  These brief outages will affect all administrative computers (including labs) and any wireless networks not in residence halls.

During the outage periods, computer systems in the affected buildings will have no communication to other systems, either on or off campus.

6th Annual Office of the CIO Golf Outing

This event is schedule for Friday, July 30 at the Stone Ridge Golf Club.  Registration includes 18 holes of golf, complimentary range balls prior to the round, two drink tickets and appetizers following the competition.  Prizes will be awarded.  Teams of four will compete in a best ball scramble format.

SIS, AHRS, and AFIN access

BGSU employees with access to SIS, AHRS, and AFIN on the mainframe are reminded that the mainframe is being decommissioned on June 30, 2010. This means the mainframe will be turned off and access to it for historical information will cease. In preparation for the decommissioning, general access to the mainframe will be turned off effective at the end of the business day on Friday, May 28.

Ugrades and Outages Scheduled

The following outages have been scheduled in order to complete system maintenance and upgrades:

    • MyFiles will be unavailable from 5-6 a.m. on Monday, May 17
    • The OnBase document imaging system available at dim.bgsu.edu will be unavailable on Wednesday, May 19 from 12:01 - 6 a.m. During the time of this outage, both the web site and the desktop application will be unavailable for use.  Application dependent on OnBase which will be unavailable during this outage period include:  e-Signatures for Summer Contracts and Addenda along with invoice viewing through PeopleSoft FMS. (OnBase outage cancelled on 5/17/10)
    • PGP will be unavailable between 12:01 - 1:05 a.m. on Thursday, May 20.  During the time of this outage users will not be able to search the keyserver for new keys to encrypt files.  Users will be able to use whole disk encryption (WDE) and will be able to encrypt and decrypt files local to their system.
    • CSS and FMS classes using UPK software will be unavailable from 12:01 - 2 a.m. on Saturday May 22. These UPK applications include but are not limited to: SF 310, SR 310, SR 320, SR 325, SR 335, and SR 231.

Network Upgrades Scheduled

In order to complete network upgrades, intermittent network outages will occur from 9 - 11:30 p.m. on Monday, May 10.  These brief outages will affect all residence halls including any wireless networks in the residence halls.  During this time, computer systems in the affected buildings will have no communication to other systems, either on or off campus.  Any questions regarding this outage may be directed to the Technology Support Center (TSC) at tsc@bgsu.edu, 2-0999.

With the successful installation of the Oracle/PeopleSoft ERP in June 2009, preparations are underway for the eventual decommissioning of the BGSU mainframe, which is expected to occur in June 2010. ASAC Software Requests Available

The application process for this year's requests for instructional software via the Academic Software Advisory Committee (ASAC) has been established. 

 

Beginning Monday, April 12 at 8 a.m. and continuing through Wednesday, April 28 at 5 p.m. faculty, including chairs and directors, may complete software requests online. The ASAC web page available at: www.bgsu.edu/offices/cio/software_request/index.html provides details regarding the project timeline, application process, application form, review criteria and a listing of ASAC committee members. 

 

The ASAC application process may be used to request new software or additional licenses for existing software. Any requests for upgrades to existing applications previously installed on campus computers may be processed using the Instructional Software Request Form available at: www.bgsu.edu/its/tsc/page9484.html .

Reminder of PageCenter Deadline 

All staff members who currently use PageCenter are reminded of the upcoming March 19 deadline for identifying specific reports to be retained and moved to OnBase.

PageCenter is a web-based tool for viewing reports from the mainframe system. PageCenter will soon be decommissioned and all documents will be deleted or moved to OnBase.

As a reminder, if you use PageCenter, please review the reports in your PageCenter mailbox(es) to determine if any reports need to be kept for legal and/or reporting requirements. A listing of any specific reports to be retained (including the mailbox they are in and how long they must be kept) should be emailed to Amy Beltano or John Konecny by March 19.

OnBase training will be provided to anyone who may need assistance.

For any reports that are no longer needed, no further action is necessary and the reports will be deleted.  Please direct any questions to Amy or John at the email address above.

Wireless Microphones in the 700MHz Band

If your department/area/organization utilizes a wireless microphone, you will need to be aware that the FCC is prohibiting the use of wireless microphones in the 700 MHz Band beginning June 12, 2010.

 

All areas of 700 MHz Band wireless microphones (and similar devices) that wish to continue to use their equipment will need to retune or replace their equipment. Devices that operate outside of the 700 MHz Band are not affected and may continue to operate.

  • SNAP survey software will be unavailable. During the time of this outage, users will be unable to take, create or access surveys that begin with a http://survey.bgsu.edu url.

Falcon Film Festival - February 27

Saturday, February 27 is the date for the 2010 Falcon Film Festival event and you are invited to attend. BGSU students have produced films depicting their college experience and the top eight films will be shown as a part of the Film Festival event beginning at 7 p.m.

The Falcon Film Festival will include the awarding of first, second, and third place prizewinners along with Best Actor and Best Actress awards. The films vary in length from seven to nine minutes and were created by teams of four or five BGSU students.

All students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to attend this event and enjoy the creatively produced films documenting life as a student at BGSU. All films are required to meet the movie industry standards or a PG rating, making this event accessible to community attendees of all ages. Audience members will also be eligible to win raffle prizes.

The event is held in 101 Olscamp Hall with doors opening at 6 p.m. The Falcon Film Festival is sponsored by the BGSU offices of the Chief Information Officer and Residence Life.

The Rhythmyx Web Content Management (CMS) system will be unavailable from 12:01 - 1 a.m. on Wednesday, February 10 in order to complete system maintenance.  Rhythmyx CMS will not be accessible for use in creating, editing, and publishing web pages; however, BGSU web pages will remain accessible for viewing and reference.

An outage of ITS database servers will occur from 12:01 - 6 a.m. on Sunday, January 24, in order to complete upgrades. As a result, multiple applications that are dependent on database information will be unavailable, including but not limited to: Production ERP (CSS and FMS), DARS, e-Time for Students, Rhythmyx, CMS, Xythos, MyFiles, Pinnacle, OnBase, Math Placement Test, English Placement Test, Schedule of Classes, Course Catalog information, Change Password, Pyramed, and Digital Assets.

Query Manager and Query Runner training classes

The BG@100 Training Team is pleased to announce the availability of Query Manager and Query Runner training classes. Query Manager will be offered on January 20 & 21 (2 day session) and Query Runner will be offered on January 27 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Query is a PeopleSoft end-user reporting tool that will allows users to write reports in order to extract information from CSS and FMS. Query allows users to create and run reports against the FMS or CSS database with these queries being as simple or as complex as needed. Queries can be created for a one-time use or they may be created and saved for future repeated use. The training sessions currently scheduled focus on examples using CSS.
