Unraveling the Mysteries of Speech and Language

The ability to speak affects nearly every aspect of our lives in profound ways. From the moment of birth, that first cry is heralded with excitement and expectation. Yet our ability to speak remains one of the greatest mysteries known to man. Oversimplified, speech seems like a natural, uncomplicated process. Air from our lungs passes through the larynx and moves up to our throat. Two vocal folds in our larynx vibrate from the air pressure, creating air puffs that become what we know as voice. When you add complicated, but well choreographed articulation of our tongues, lips and soft palates, speech results.

At Bowling Green State University, the Department of Communication Disorders takes several approaches to unraveling the mysteries of speech and language. Its educational component consists of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs in communication disorders.
