House of Representatives passes College Fire Prevention Act
In Ohio, 13 deaths have been attributed to student housing fires since 2000. A new bill created to reduce the cost of updating fire prevention and sprinkler systems in student housing is now making its way through Congress.
The House of Representatives recently passed the College Fire Prevention Act. The bill directs the Secretary of Education to make competitive grants to colleges, fraternities and sororities for up to half the cost of installing and modernizing fire-prevention and sprinkler systems in student and fraternal housing.
The bill was co-sponsored by a bipartisan group of 47 lawmakers and endorsed by national fire prevention organizations and more than 100 fraternities and sororities. Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown introduced companion legislation in the Senate.
Studies show when fire-prevention and sprinkler systems are present, the survival chances for students increase by 97 percent and property damage is lowered by 35 percent.
