Exploring Your Optionsthe sky’s the limit

Maybe you’re already sick of the question “So, what are you going to major in?” It’s a natural question to ask students. People ask you this because it’s something you have in common and can be a great conversation starter.

Keep in mind; the choice of your major does not dictate your career path. True, it’s an important decision, but it’s only one step in the whole career planning process. It’s not even the most important step! So, how do you decide?

Become knowledgeable about the choices available and what they require. Use the catalog and department websites. Talk to students and faculty in departments you are considering. In addition, visit the Office of Pre-Major and Academic Planning to explore your skills, values and interests, and find out how this connects with your academic choices.

Remember, when you choose a subject you love, you increase your level of engagement and motivation. Focus on developing essential skills and competencies and find ways to gain experience, rather than choosing the “right” major. The Office of Pre-Major and Academic Planning can help you understand the “big picture” and career possibilities.
