BGSU Firelands breaks ground on arboretum upgrade

BGSU Firelands arboretum groundbreaking
BGSU Firelands and community leaders break ground on the arboretum upgrades.

Upgrades are under way at the James H. McBride Arboretum on the BGSU Firelands campus to make it more accessible to visitors. Firelands and community leaders broke ground on the $378,000 in improvements July 16.

Funded through a state appropriation, the changes include a new parking lot, entrance and bathrooms. The plan also includes space for an adjacent picnic shelter.

The finished project will also have many green components. Part of the parking lot will feature grass and pavers instead of asphalt to reduce runoff. The bathroom will have motion sensors on the lights and skylights to reduce the amount of artificial light needed.

The work is scheduled to be completed in November.
