Student Leadership Assistants

Program Description:

The Student Leadership Assistants (SLAs) assist the Center for Leadership (CFL) by researching, developing, administering and assessing a broad array of student leadership development and educational programs. The SLAs are a group of students passionate about leadership and social change. SLAs work in the CFL as paraprofessional undergraduate student employees with tasks such as: leadership program development, outreach to and consultation with other student organizations and university departments, representing CFL at various events and on various committees, event planning committee work, and serving as an administrative support for the Center for Leadership. The various functions of the SLA position culminate in supporting the mission, vision, and values of the Center for Leadership.

Compensation:

Selected students receive a semester payment of $1000. In addition, SLAs will receive all textbooks required for academic courses through the University Bookstore Book Loan Program. (These textbooks must be returned at the end of the semester.)

Applicant Qualifications:

  • Sophomore, junior, or senior class standing as of fall 2014
  • Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student at BGSU for the full academic year
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Commitment to and passion for leadership and social change
  • Demonstrated leadership potential
  • Students with limited involvement seeking to get more involved are encouraged to apply, as well as students who have demonstrated a commitment to student leadership who would like to share their knowledge with their peers.
  • Strong oral communication and presentation skills
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, written communication skills, ability to set priorities if necessary, time management
  • Strong interpersonal skills are desirable
  • Able to work independently as well as in teams
  • Familiarity with MS Office and the ability to develop other computer skills as needed

Recipient Commitments:

SLAs must.....

  • Be available for an all-day SLA retreat in April 27, 2014
  • Return to BGSU prior to fall semester for a week-long training that will begin on Monday August 18, 2014
  • Be available for two weekend training retreats per semester
  • Be available to return to BGSU prior to spring semester for a 1-day retreat in January
  • Commit to weekly staff meetings and to weekly one-on-one supervisory meeting
  • Work a total of 10 hours per week in the Center for Leadership. Of the 10 hours, at least 6 hours will be worked as scheduled office hours during the 8am-5pm workday.
