Student Recreation Center - Renovation Project FAQ

This page is developed based on patron and student questions. Please contact the Recreation and Wellness staff at recwell@bgsu.edu to submit additional questions or for additional clarification.

Where do I park?

Parking permits are required for all vehicles parking on campus. Patrons of the SRC may park at the Perry Field House (Lot 18), at the BGSU Ice Arena (Lot 10), or behind Moore Musical Arts Center (Lot 16). Visitors can purchase permits at the SRC, PFH, Parking Services or the Visitor’s Center. Individuals visiting campus for shorter periods may purchase short-term permits or park in hourly paid parking. Reference Parking Services Website or view the Parking Map (PDF) for more details. Back door access from Lot X is available but limited to patrons with physician‐provided “Handicap” hanging permits only.

Where is the entrance?

There are two separate entrances during the construction process and both are clearly labeled with directional signage outside the facility. Patrons are not able to access one area from the other inside the building. The Weights/Cardio/Group Exercise/Courts Entrance is located on the east side of the facility, while the Pool/Offices Entrance is located on the northwest side of the facility. Back door access from Lot X is available but limited to patrons with physician‐provided “Handicap” hanging permits only. View the Construction Entry Map for complete details.

What are the hours?

The Student Recreation Center Hours are posted and updated on this website. Use the link in the right navigation on this page or click HERE for complete details. The Perry Field House is available as an additional alternative. Watch for the new BGSU App that contains a complete listing of SRC and PFH activity levels along with Group X schedules and other Recreation and Wellness events. The App is scheduled to release early in the semester for iOS and later in the fall for Android.

Are memberships available and if so, how and where can they be purchased?

Memberships to the Student Recreation Center (SRC) are available throughout the 2013-14 academic year and may be purchased at the Activity Courts or Perry Field House (PFH) Welcome Desk during all operating hours. Prices reflect the limited use and inconvenience caused by the renovation. Click HERE for more details.

Where can I find staff and what are they doing during construction?

As noted above, Recreation and Wellness is committed to providing continuing services to students, BG and BGSU community members throughout this construction project. All staff remain active and can be reached at the numbers or emails listed on the STAFF page of this website. Wellness Connection programming, graduate assistants and marketing staff have relocated to the Perry Field House. SRC Facility Staff, Welcome Desk, and Fitness operations are located in the Activity Courts area of the SRC. Other staff remain in the office suite located in the basement level of the SRC accessible from the Pool/Offices entrance.

What parts of the Rec remain open?

While some facility spaces are closed, every effort will be made to maintain most services in a different area within the SRC, or in other buildings including the Perry Field House. State of Ohio Building Codes and occupancy restrictions apply. The Activity Courts section of the building (weight-lifting, cardio equipment, group exercise classes, personal training, open gym, etc.) has a capacity limit of 200. The Pool/Office section of the building has a capacity limit of 100. Temporary rinse stations are installed on the Cooper Pool deck and separate changing areas for male and female patrons are offered. Restrooms and drinking water are also provided.

What activities are continuing this year?

Weight lifting, drop in basketball, group exercise classes, personal training, cardio, and intramural sports are offered throughout the renovation. Private and semi-private Learn to Swim lessons continue. Perry Field House events and Forrest Creason Golf Course also continue regular or enhanced operation. Additional showers and day--use lockers are available at the Perry Field House.

What activities or services are not available this year due to the renovation?

The sauna, Andrews Pool, hot tub, racquetball, squash, wallyball, climbing wall, track, small-group swimming lessons, and birthday parties are not offered this year. There are limited showers (one male and one female), and no towel service. Private rentals of the Dance Room or Multi-Purpose Room are not available. Locker use is limited to day use at the PFH and is not offered at the SRC. Regular facility use and programming resumes in fall 2014.

What is the finger vein reader at the Welcome Desk?

The Department of Recreation and Wellness has an upgraded authentication process using biometric technology. When entering the SRC or Perry Field House, students and members have the option to use a finger vein reader as opposed to swiping a key fob or BGSU ID card. The one-time setup takes about two minutes. Once registered, an infrared camera scans and absorbs a user’s vein patterns in about two seconds and does not scan, recognize, or store fingerprints. Blood vessel patterns are unique to each individual and are almost impossible to counterfeit because they are located beneath the skin's surface. Using the vein reader technology is optional.

Why didn't the project begin during summer 2013 when students were away?

As with any construction project, the planning and designing process is detailed and time consuming. While the initial goal was to begin during the summer semester, the bidding process, schematic design and drawings phases, as well as state requirements and budgeting all played a role in requiring construction to begin in August. Regardless of the start date, the goal remains to have the work completed and the facility ready for the start of the school year, August 2014.

When is construction going to be finished?

The construction schedule is expected to take up to 12 months and conclude in August 2014.
