WellAware - Current Programs

WellAware offers specially designed programs to the faculty, staff and retirees of BGSU. In addition to the health and wellness benefits derived from participation in WellAware events and activities, employees are can receive incentive prizes.  

Call for Wellness Champions!

WellAware is recruiting volunteers to serve as Wellness Champions for their department. Wellness Champions are ambassadors for WellAware and their main responsibility is sharing program information and encouraging healthier habits within their work areas. Being a Champion is a great opportunity to assist with wellness initiatives and build a wellness culture on campus.  The time commitment is minimal and you do not need to be the healthiest person in your department. A great Wellness Champion is someone who is enthusiastic about improving their health and motivating others to do the same.  If you are interested in becoming a Wellness Champion, please contact Karyn Smith at karync@bgsu.edu.

Make the Trip of a Lifetime - HealthTrip Wellness Challenge

HealthTrip is a fictitious journey that takes participants across the country in search of better health and behavior changes! Week-by-week learn about important aspects of staying healthy and have fun doing it! Along the journey there are 12 stops:

  • Pressureburgh, Pennsylvania
  • Las Veggies, Nevada
  • Rest Palm Beach, Florida
  • New Balancewick, Canada
  • Stretch Louis, Missouri
  • Heartford, Connecticut
  • Grain Cayman Island

  • Hahalulu, Hawaii
  • Sweetattle, Washington
  • Strength Falls, South Dakota

Explore each location for one month and earn Frequent Mover Miles by logging physical activity and completing specific wellness challenges. Complete the activities independently and have the opportunity to participate in monthly excursions. To make travels even more enjoyable, these coveted miles can be redeemed for exciting prizes.

Maintain Don't Gain Holiday Challenge: November 25 - January 17

Unwrap a healthier, happier you this holiday season with this FREE program designed to provide motivation to avoid holiday weight gain. Available to all BGSU faculty, staff and students on the main campus and at Firelands.

  • Participate individually or create a team of two to four participants.
  • Register by attending a pre-holiday weigh-in. Weights are kept confidential. 
  • Receive practical tips, recipes, physical activity suggestions and other information to help engage in healthy behaviors throughout the holiday season. 
  • Receive great workouts and opportunities to participate in instructor led classes.
  • Attend a post-holiday "weigh-out" during the week of January 13. All teams or individuals who maintain or lose weight during the holiday season qualify for select raffle prizes!

Physical Activity

Free Employee Fitness Classes at the Student Recreation Center

Register now for the free employee group exercise classes available this spring. Classes are only available to BGSU faculty, administrative and classified staff and pre-registration is required. 

Register Online: Classes are available January 13 - April 2.

  • Employee Zumba® – An exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness-party™. Classes are available on Mondays from 5:30 – 6:15 PM in the Student Recreation Center Activity Court 4.
  • Employee Cardio and Tone – Work your way to a stronger, healthier you. This class is a great combination of strength training exercises utilizing dumbbells, resistance bands and body bars, incorporating cardio moves on and off the step. Classes are available on Wednesdays from 5:30 – 6:15 PM in the Student Recreation Center Activity Court 4, and taught by Sheila Brown.

Group X Waiver and Medical Clearance Form

A Waiver/ Health Assessment needs to be completed prior to class participation.  The Medical Clearance Form needs to be completed and returned IF you answer “yes” to any of the questions in the Health History section of the waiver form.  If you answer “no” to all of the questions, this Medical Clearance form is not required.

BG Be Fit

Is your goal to become more active, feel better, and improve your health and fitness? Set yourself up for success by joining BG Be Fit, a 12-week beginner exercise program for BGSU faculty and staff. This free program is specifically designed to teach you the basic techniques of regular aerobic, resistance, and flexibility training. Program is available to male and females and the exercise classes can be adjusted to match your individual fitness level. Feel comfortable exercising with other beginners and receive the guidance and encouragement needed to start and continue a lifestyle of exercise.  

Classes available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:00 - 12:45 PM in Eppler South Gym from January 28 - April 24. Register at www.bgsu.edu/wellaware.

Yoga As You Are

Take a short stress relieving break and participate in this free 30-minute gentle yoga class. This low-impact class includes gentle stretches, balance and breathing as well as movements designed to increase range of motion in joints and relieve stress. Walking to Wellness

No registration required. Just show up with comfortable footwear and start walking your way to better health and wellness!

Free Session with a Personal Trainer

Schedule a free one-hour fitness consultation and meet with a certified personal trainer to discuss goals, barriers, and other factors related to physical activity and fitness. Call 419-372-2000 to set up an appointment.

StairWELL to Better Health

Taking the stairs is one simple way to be more physically active throughout the work day. To encourage this, WellAware and the Center of Excellence of Health and Wellness Across the Lifespan are collaborating with graphic design students to create inspiring and motivational graphics in stairwells throughout campus buildings. Take the StairWELL challenge and step up to a healthier lifestyle!

Mental Health and Well-Being

Mindfulness Workshop

In our modern daily, stressful lives we catch ourselves creating anxiety about future events and worrying about past actions, living in a state of reactivity to external stressors. Practicing Mindfulness lets us live peacefully in the present moment by improving concentration, lessening stress, increasing well-being, one breath at a time.

February 10 – April 10.
No classes over spring break, March 10 – 14.
Sessions occur Monday and Thursday from 5:15 – 6:00 PM.

Facilitator: Caroline Dawson, Certified Mindfulness Instructor, with over 18 years of Yoga and meditation experience.

Cost: $50 for 16 sessions
Don’t delay, space is limited. Register at the Student Recreation Center Welcome Desk. Workshop is available to BGSU faculty, staff, students, and community members.

Meet Caroline Dawson and try a free introductory mindfulness session on Monday, February 3, in BTSU 314 and Thursday, February 6, in Olscamp 115. Both sessions are from 5:15 – 6:00 PM.

Caregiving Support Group

The challenges of caring for others can result in caregivers ignoring their own physical and emotional health. Because family caregivers must attempt to balance work responsibilities with their caregiving responsibilities, it is not surprising that many caregivers are emotionally drained and physically exhausted. The BGSU Gerontology Program is organizing an on-campus support group to help those balance work while providing care. Contact Nancy Orel at norel@bgsu.edu or 419.372.7768.

BGSU Employee Mother’s Circle – Support group for moms with young children

Are you a double duty mom, working outside and inside the house? Juggling demands at work and family duties can be overwhelming and stressful. Share concerns and receive helpful guidance from other moms who are in your situation by joining the on-campus mom’s support group.  The group meets the fourth Monday of each month and the third Monday of each month from 12:00 – 1:00 PM in Hanna Hall 107.  Bring your lunch and enjoy time discussing your little ones. Dining Services

Dining Services is now offering Meatless Mondays and Flexitarian Fridays.  Meatless Mondays simply call attention to those menu items that are vegetarian on the menu for the day and this occurs in all locations, every Monday. Free Body Fat Testing

Personal Training is offering FREE Body Fat Testing - view current schedule here.

Body fat is measured using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, a non-invasive, handheld device that measures body composition through a light electrical current.
