The Anna Mae Thomas Educational Scholarship

In 1943, Anna Mae Thomas became the first African-American woman to graduate from Bowling Green State University. She attended elementary and high school in Sandusky, Ohio. She finished with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. During her college years, she worked for Dr. Frank Prout who was the superintendent of schools and later became President of Bowling Green State University. Anna Mae Thomas went on to receive her Master’s degree in Education and Psychology from the American University.

In 1995, Anna Mae Thomas established The Anna Mae Thomas Educational Scholarship. This scholarship is intended to support an African-American student pursuing a degree in Education, General Science, or Technology, Recipients of this award should be able to show evidence of good work ethic and a strong determination for academic success and degree completion.

This scholarship will be awarded annually – two non-renewable awards of $750 will be given to the recipients during the 2013-2014 academic year. The award shall be made directly to each recipient’s bursar account and is to be used for any educational purposes (i.e. tuition, books, room and board, etc.,). Student applying for this scholarship must meet ALL of the following criteria:

 

  • Have completed at least 60 credit hours by the end of the spring 2013 semester
  • Have a minimum 2.5 grade point average
  • Be of African American descent
  • Demonstrate some form of financial need
  • Be pursuing a degree in Education, General Science, or Technology

Applications are due Friday, December 13, 2013 by 5:00 p.m.
