BGSU and Campus Pride

Bowling Green State University was recently recognized by the national organization Campus Pride as a premiere Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Trans* friendly campus. Started in 2001, Campus Pride advocates for the safety and full inclusion of LGBT students and LGBT student organizations. As part of the Office of Multicultural Affairs, BGSU’s LGBT Resource Center took part in the Campus Climate Index National Assessment Tool, “which provides benchmarking to better understand policies, programs and practices that impact the quality of life for LGBT & Ally people on campus.”

The university received top honors in several categories; specifically, we earned five stars in LGBT Student Life! The assessment indicates that BGSU has a broad range of services and programs geared toward queer identifying community members, which includes a strong commitment to meeting the needs of LGBT students of color. This recognition highlights ongoing collaborative programming among the LGBT resource center, student run organizations, the counseling center, and the Dean of Students Office.

In a separate category, the campus was praised for LGBT Academic Life. BGSU’s course catalogue features an array of classes themed around the LGBT community, including the sexuality studies minor, offered through the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program.  As our campus continues to diversify and grow, Campus Pride’s assessment shows that we are providing a safe and inclusive environment to retain our LGBT students and putting ourselves in a place to attract many more!
