The Unveiling Ceremony remembers and honors local girls and women whose lives ended abruptly and violently at the hands of a husband, ex-husband, partner or stalker. Each year, the Women’s Center at BGSU unveils the names and stories of these Silent Witnesses at the Unveiling Ceremony where each name and story is read in first-person. This Silent Witness chapter has over 65 life-size Silent Witnesses from Northwest Ohio alone. This collection of mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, nieces, and friends is a powerful testament to our community’s commitment to break the silence about domestic violence.
This Year's Ceremony:
Keynote Speaker Paula Walters
Keynote Speaker Paula Walters, a certified paramedic, founded Standing Courageous, Inc. to train emergency responders to respond effectively and compassionately to victims of domestic violence.
As a medical professional, she recognizes the urgent need for multi-agency coordination between law enforcement, EMTs, 911 dispatchers, hospital emergency room staff, victim advocates and prosecutors.
And as a strangulation survivor whose abuser served no jail time, she knows all too well that the quality of response to victims can mean the difference between life and death.
