Violence done to the body
to save the body: tomorrow
my friend will leave the hospital
without her breasts. We say at least
she has her life, her work, her legs.
Fate's impersonal face looks back
at me from every burning bush.
The crack I hear isn't a bullet
but another apple falling
hard on the tin roof overhead
