The Circus Left Town Never to Return

Vol. XXVI, no. 1

Billy Collins

So let's go back to bed
and pick up where we left off with the ceiling

or consult the alarm clock
next to the water glass on the night table,

always there to entertain us
with its round-the-clock antics—

its hands hanging down like a hick's,
then performing its frantic exercises,

or, now that midnight is near,
both arms raised high as if at gunpoint.
